Introducing Programming — Meet and Code at Sumnal
On October 6, 2018, I delivered two introductory programming sessions during Meet and Code at Sumnal. The sessions covered programming fundamentals, digital skills and examples of Macedonian developers and technology companies.
The event was hosted by Sumnal Association for Development of the Roma Community in Macedonia. My contribution focused on introducing technology through approachable explanations and connecting programming concepts with recognisable digital products.
Session 1 — Programming Fundamentals
The first session introduced commonly used programming terms, techniques and methods. I explained how information technology can be applied in everyday life and discussed the benefits of developing digital skills.
For someone encountering programming for the first time, unfamiliar terminology can make the subject seem difficult to approach. The purpose of this introduction was to provide a starting point and a clearer context for the words used when discussing software and technology.
Rather than presenting the session as a complete programming course, I focused on an initial introduction. It was an opportunity to connect basic ideas with the applications and services people encounter around them.
Session 2 — Developers, Companies and Digital Products
The second session focused on examples of Macedonian programmers and technology companies, with particular attention to sports games and applications.
These examples connected the introductory concepts with recognisable digital products and showed different ways programming skills can be applied. Games and applications provided a useful context for discussing the people and companies behind software.
Together, the two sessions moved from introductory terminology to concrete examples. This gave the event a clear progression: first introducing the subject, then exploring where it can lead.
Community Activities at Meet and Code at Sumnal
Alongside the two sessions, I shared practical tips for using social networks. The wider programme also included programming books as prizes and a Pro Evolution Soccer competition.
Meet and Code at Sumnal brought these educational sessions and community activities into one event. My role was to deliver the two talks and contribute practical knowledge to the programme.
